From Her father’s Fields to Her Own Vision Maria’s roots in the Yakima Valley run deep. Her father, Ramon, came to Washington from Michoacán, Mexico, more than forty years ago. He began working in the orchards, pruning trees and picking fruit, until an orchardist named Steve Newhouse encouraged him to buy his own land.
